We have to deal with this with our corporate gifting program all the time. As far as I know you have to give a gift card to give away an iPhone. It sucks but its just how Apple has set it up. This would not necessarily fall "squarly" on squarespaces shoulders ;o)

Agreed. If they're saying that they're giving me an iPhone, I should get an iPhone.

I'm not entirely sure, but this might be the only way you can gift an iPhone. I know Apple sells special iPhone themed gift cards [1] because you can't simply buy a boxed iPhone and give it to someone as you could with the first generation.
